Daily Sketch: Dinnertime!

pencil sketch of three cats eating

It’s Kelly, Mimi and Cookie enjoying dinner. No time for a sketch this morning, the usual time for sketches as warm-ups, but I knew I’d be gone all day, hoping I could get one later.

I knew I wanted to get this one, but also knew I’d have a limited time since they get their bowls before the young animals do and the three girls don’t waste any time once they get to it. I had my sketchbook and pencil on the sink and as soon as I set down the bowls for the kids I got right to the sketch.

This sketch is available for sale in my Etsy shop. Why this one and a few others, but not all of them? See below.

Click here to see other daily sketches, and for a gallery of the ones available for sale, visit my Etsy shop in the “Daily Sketches” section. I don’t want to list every single one so I have to decide by my own arbitrary and subjective method if I think someone somewhere would like to buy this sketch. Some of them just look like sketches other people would like to have in their home, so those are the ones I post for sale. If you don’t see one on Etsy you’d like, send me an e-mail—it might have been sold, or I might just have just thought it wouldn’t be as appealing as another.

  1. […] Read more about Dinnertime! from the day I posted it. This sketch of the three girls is one of my favorites, and because Kelly and Cookie are torties with touches of orange and Mimi has a good bit of mahogany in her fur I used a rust-colored liner mat to recall those tones, and a silver-gray marbled mat to complement the pencil. Even your sketches are amazing!

Your sketches really remind me of the illustrator/author Clare Turlay Newberry. Are you familiar with her? I LOVE her stuff. I actively am collecting her books. Many are hard to find now. Love your blog and your cats are all gorgeous/handsome!

Oh my goodness, WHAT A COMPLIMENT!! I could only hope to keep working and achieve her level some day, but thank you so much, Heather–and also for collecting her work!

I found a copy of her book Marshmallow at a used book store and fell in love. I had to find the rest. 🙂 I even was able to track down a copy of Pandora on Ebay that wasn’t out of my price range. They are very beautiful. You both do such a great job of catching cats the way they truly are in real life. 🙂 I think one of my favorites of her books is the one called Widget. Have you seen it?

    • animalartist says:

Heather, a friend of mine bought them for her daughters years ago and they have decided to keep them at her house so they can both enjoy them still, so I have seen them. Oddly enough, I had not seen any of them until about a decade ago and I don’t know how I missed her work all these years! I’ve been away from my daily sketches for a while, but this is one of the reasons I’m adamant about doing one nearly every day so that I can get back to building my style. Thanks again!

  7. I love the curve of the neck and head of the kitty on the right – is that Cookie?

    • animalartist says:

Christine, yes, that’s Cookie! You can see her dish is already nearly empty–she hangs off the edge of the counter and I have to set her dish next to her, and she never gets into a comfortable position just gets her face in the bowl and eats. She’s always been serious about food, and at 19 I don’t complain about any way she wants to eat!
