Can’t I Get Any Privacy? From A Year Ago Today

Don't Look!

But Jelly Bean, your little white thong is so cute. And you’re the one who decided to expose yourself in the middle of the bed.

The other three of the Big Four seem to be featured more often than JB, and I’m not sure why. He’s just terminally cute for some reason I can’t define, but it’s hard to catch his cuteness and his LOUD PURRR in a photo.

Jelly Bean Strolls the Windowsill

It could be his looks. I always remind him that he’s made out of spare parts. Unlike his siblings who are all big and long-legged and graceful, he’s the smallest of them with somewhat short legs and little paws like his mom, and a rather rounded body, surprising since he was so scrawny as a kitten I was concerned about him.

He’s the only one of the four who has any significant white as well, my little Jellicle Cat. They all have a few white hairs here and there, and for some reason they all have white hairs in their ears, but Jelly Bean has actual white brushes, his “old man ear hairs”. Then there’s that non-committal smear of white hairs on his chest that I sometimes call his clerical collar when he’s looking particularly serious. He even has white hairs in his armpits.

And you can’t miss the big white triangle on his belly, especially when he lays back and spread his legs to wash it! And he doesn’t understand why I take his picture!

But he is the charmer of the group—he has a habit of batting his eyelashes over those big green eyes with a look that’s hard to resist, and even before his eyes were open he’d toddle to the door of the cage they were in and face my direction and purr happily. He’s also been the one to officially greet the two new kitties who’ve come here since the family has joined me; he’ll be a great nanny cat to fosters.

Here’s one photo of him that’s good for a laugh, a really lucky shot of him admiring himself in the hand mirror in the bathroom while it was being remodeled. I actually offer this one as a print and on a tote bag; check my Etsy shop for details.

Little Colored Sticks

Mr. Sunshine considers what he'd do with those little colored sticks of mine.

“I don’t get your fascination with these little colored sticks. You play with them all the time and I don’t see what you get out of it, in fact, sometimes you are downright angry. Do you have any idea what I could do with those little colored sticks?”

Luckily, this is a really cheap set of my little colored sticks, the ones I take “into the field” or around the house, and if they are dropped on the floor or into the creek, I’m only out a few bucks and not the amount of an investment in art materials, so if Mr. Sunshine decides to swipe a paw at them and they end up all over the room, I’ll be fine, and he will get to live.

Of course, I’d never endanger either him or my art materials, and for the record I’m the only one in this house who’s dumped a whole box of expensive pastels on the floor.

“And I don’t know about that painting, that’s not what it looks like out that window at all. I look out that window all the time.”

Oh, now he’s an art critic.

A Loyal Sister

tortie cat and black cat

"She is my sister."

Mewsette let herself into the bathroom this afternoon and cuddled with Cookie, who can use some big little sister warmth and energy!

On these cold days Cookie stays in the bathroom where it’s warmer and she has the litterbox and water within a few steps. Kelly stays in there with her for company and has been giving Cookie her own brand of love and healing.

Perhaps Mewsette just wanted to see what special food and treats the tortie girls had in there, but if so she would have checked and left; and the funniest thing is that it’s Giuseppe and Mr. Sunshine who open doors if necessary, Mewsette has never shown the least interest or ability. When it was the girls’ lunch, I couldn’t coax her away with anything and didn’t have the heart to make her leave. So the girls ate a little later than usual.

Cookie still has some healing to do; her blood test results were truly frightening. However, if it hadn’t been 17 degrees this morning we would have gone outside. I had her with me at my desk and she is wobbly but was back to looking out the window with the boys and wandering from door to door wanting to visit the outside even if it was obviously frigid.

But with a tortie sister like Kelly who cares for her and a big little sister like Mewsette who gives her warmth and energy, she’s on her way. Here’s another photo of Mewsette guarding Cookie.

Daily Sketch: Curving Bath Cat

ink sketch of cat bathing

Curving Bath Cat, ink marker © B.E. Kazmarski

If you remember playing jump rope, and you would watch the rope swinging round and round, moving your head and hands up and down and making little false leaps until you felt you had the rhythm and could jump in without getting smacked with quickly-swinging rope, then that might describe me swinging my gaze and pen up and down over my paper, almost touching the pen to it but stopping at the last moment as I followed Mewsette’s vigorous bath, not a special bath, just an everyday 4:00 p.m. bath, a little clean-up before tea. I finally did touch the pen to the paper, and then it was a race to the finish before she started on her other shoulder.

This sketch is in that brush-tip marker again, but instead of sketching sleeping cats with it—way too easy, ha!—I thought I’d try to capture that graceful curve of a cat having a bath which I love so much; you’ve seen it here before in sketches and a sculpture based on a very old sketch. Guess I never get tired of certain themes, just as I never get tired of living with cats.
