Daily Sketch: TGIF

ink sketch of two cats

TGIF, brush marker © B.E. Kazmarski

“TGIF!!! We’re exhausted! Mom’s been on a roll all week and we haven’t been able to keep up with her. We hear some of us have been ‘framed’! We don’t know, we slept through it all.”

Mr. Sunshine and Giuseppe have been hanging together this week, just sitting together and using each other as pillows. They may have missed all the activity upstairs, but Mimi and Mewsette closely observed all my activities, even if it looked as if they were asleep.

But they are right, I have been on a roll, busy at my computer as well as upstairs in my studio, and I promise I’ll reply to comments over the weekend as well as post some new things. The subjects of my work just want to be sure they get fed on time.

Springtime Snack

cat eating cat grass

Kelly enjoys a snack.

It has barely sprouted and it’s still very thin, but Kelly is too happy about her greens to wait for them to grow bigger. She is so excited that she talks about it, leaps onto the cabinet, talks some more, eats a bit, goes back to the table, then does the whole thing all over again.

The others have been nibbling as well, but they seem to understand Kelly has first dibs on it.

Unless I have linked the photo to something else, which is rare with daily photos, you can click the photo to see a larger version. I save them at 1000 pixels maximum dimension, and at that size the photos are nearly twice the dimension and you can see more detail in many of the photos I post. Please remember if you download or share, my name and the link back to the original photo should always appear with it.

You’re Looking at Me, Right? 2011

black cat in front of painting

I deserve to be admired.

You’re looking at me, right?

And you’re talking about my great handsomeness and pointing at my special characteristics, like my special white ear hair and my white collar, perhaps my exotic green eyes as I give you my most serious, dignified look.

I know I’m the cutest cat you’ve ever seen.

All this has nothing to do with all the art hanging on the easel and the wall behind me. I am in front and I am the focus of all your attention as long as I sit here.

Just as cute in 2012 as he was in 2011, Jelly Bean will go to great lengths to make himself the center of attention.

Antique Kitties and Threads

reproduction of antique post card

A reproduction of an antique post card or trading card.

A perfect sign for an interior designer and seamstress who loves and rescues cats!

I visited Bonita at Distinctly Different Design & More to check on artwork and other things and happened to see this embossed sign tacked up on the wall outside her sewing studio. The design is rather popular in reproduction, though I’ve seen there are a few originals around.

Not sure why these three are playing instruments, perhaps because of the mention of “six cord” thread? Or the drum resembles a spool of thread? But I love the two tabbies with white bellies and the black cat with a red bowtie playing the bass! What do you suppose they’re playing? Some Dixieland tune from New Orleans judging by the instruments included.

I love early advertising, everything from concept to illustration to hand-drawn headlines, and if it has a cat in it, so much the better! Also interesting to note that often the black areas in the illustration were printed as hand-drawn metal-plate etchings, then the prints were hand-colored with watercolors by skilled artisans, usually women, as color plates were in old botanical books. By the time this was printed, however, it was likely that multiple-plate printing for color was also available.

Just thought I’d share this with other cat lovers.

I’ll soon be featuring a special project Bonita will be creating, made by hand for a special cat or dog! She carries my greeting cards and a selection of originals and prints in her shop; read about it here.
