Okay, they do look like Easter eggs…

A few people remarked that the kitties in this sketch remind them of Easter eggs. Yes, bright colors and shapes, they certainly do! I first posted this at the beginning of march and I was thinking spring flowers when I looked at it, but just for today, they’ve been hand-colored by the Easter bunny! Read the original post, “Mimi in the Middle”.

And from just the other day, Mr. Sunshine, usually yellow or orange or even some such color denoting his name, ended up in hot pink! Yes, he too is dressed for Easter. See “Kitty in Pink”. And have a colorful Easter!

Giuseppe Performs

black cat stretching on desk

Giuseppe put on quite a performance on my desk today!

Breakdancing? Recumbent disco, perhaps? A dramatic death scene from some Wagnerian opera? His team won?

Ah, a sweet message from his amour, Mlle. Daisy Emerald Marguerite. Be cautious, Giuseppe, Mlle. may be a little shocked to see you in full ecstasy!

No, Giuseppe says, “Lighten up mom! Life is good!” This is one of the good things about living with cats.

Enjoy the rest of Giuseppe’s performance.

Excuse Me, Girlfriend? 2011

black cat and tortie cat nose to nose

Mimi and Cookie

Cookie and Mimi actually get along just fine, but Mimi kept trying to: 1) steal the limelight as I was photographing The Goddess, and; 2) steal the catnip candy cane from under Cookie’s paws. Cookie gives a friendly warning, her ears and whiskers swept forward, and a warning was enough for Mimi, ears and whiskers swept back.

Cookie’s coloring looks odd because she is in full sun so her details are flashed out in order to get any detail in Mimi, who is in shadow. Why couldn’t they have been reversed?!

I Tried to Fly…

black cat on laundry

Jelly Bean tried to fly, but this worked out better.

…but I landed on the laundry. This was pretty comfortable, so I decided I’d just stay here for a while, have a good nap, and meditate about being Peter Pan.

I decided the laundry is a pretty nice place, and even though Mama Bernadette tried to move me I just acted like I was in a really deep sleep. Why would she want to move me when she can see I’m in a transcendent state? I just can’t figure out humans, but she went away.

And then she came back with the little box. But I was busy flying around and laughing down at my siblings.

Much better than flying around for real.

Daily Sketch: Line of Giuseppe

line drawing of cat

Line of Giuseppe, ink © B.E. Kazmarski

Giuseppe was politely sleeping on my desk, so he became today’s subject as I attempted another reticulation, a drawing in one long line without lifting your pen from the paper and without stopping. Technically, the lines shouldn’t cross either, but in this case I was also trying to draw without looking at the paper just to see how tightly connected my eyes and right hand were. Honestly, I did look down twice, on his face and on his ears.

Overall I think it came out okay, and this is a great exercise for warm-up or for training your hand to trust what your eyes see.

Daily Sketch: On the Flowered Rug

sketch of two black cats on rug

On the Flowered Rug, marker © B.E. Kazmarski

These two settled on the landing for a good bit of the afternoon and I decided to take a moment to sketch them on the flowered rug, in whatever positions they were in at the moment.

I was happy enough with the sketch, but when I scanned it the lighter pink, kind of a bright highlighter pink, did not scan at all. Nothing, no color in that area. I put down another layer hoping that would darken it enough. Pale pink. I actually laid yellow down over it, and finally it scanned as…yellow-orange. In PhotoShop I changed the tone, hue and saturation of the yellow and came up with this pink, which is actually closer to the real pink than the bright highlighter pink was, but now all the other colors are different. Except the black. But anyway, it’s the two figures I like.

Mewsette the Big Little Sister: 2011

two cats at the top of the stairs

Cookie and Mewsette

A sweet one from last year…

Mewsette always makes these little overtures to Cookie, and you can see by Cookie’s reaction that it’s not well-received. You can also see that Mewsette is easily twice as big as Cookie and can take a beating from a sometimes fussy senior tortie girl. Mewsette apparently loves her little big sister, and perhaps some day Cookie will learn to appreciate her big little sister.

Cookie doesn’t know, but Mewsette curls up next to her on the bed after Cookie has fallen asleep, and Cookie certainly appreciates Mewsette’s warmth, even if she’s not awake to know it.

Here are a few images of Mewsette keeping watch over Cookie as she slept: Big and Little Sisters and Copy Cats, and cuddling with her when she wasn’t feeling well: A Loyal Sister and Cookie Says Thank You. Cookie did grow to appreciate big, warm, soft Mewsette, as seen in Cookie’s Blessing.

Daily Sketch: One of Those Positions

charcoal sketch of cat with leg in the air

One of Those, charcoal © B.E. Kazmarski

I was planning on a nice, quiet, peaceful classic charcoal sketch of Mr. Sunshine as a loaf, dozing with nice deep shadows and gentle highlights at the end of the day, ears in nice positions listening to the evening birds outside the window, eyes slowly blinking. Really looking forward to it I even had my sketchbook ready and all the charcoal pencils and sticks I needed all set up. I picked up my pencil to do a light outline…

…and he jumped up and thrust his leg in the air and began licking himself. Now he’s curled and quietly sleeping, looking like a peaceful little angel. But mom gets her revenge. So he gets one of these sketches today.

Listening to Mom

two black cats in sun

Giuseppe attentively listens to Mimi.

Giuseppe is resting but attentive when he and Mimi were resting together in the sun on the landing. I know they were communicating very deeply, and Giuseppe’s golden eyes were glowing as he calmly listened. Was she telling stories of life on the streets? Telling him about his daddy cat? Perhaps giving him tips on how to further woo Mademoiselle Daisy Emerald Marguerite? Perhaps the relative flavor of chipmunk versus field mouse?

Not for me to know, I suppose, silly human that I am, outnumbered and outwitted daily by the wisdom of cats.

So many lovely photos today I had a truly difficult time choosing. I think I’ll cheat and use a few others on other days.

Daily Sketch: Contrast Couple

charcoal sketch of two black cats

Contrast Couple, charcoal pencil © B.E. Kazmarski

Jelly Bean and Mimi hang out in the sun on the counter by the dining room window.

A nice contrasty sketch since the sun was bright, using a good soft charcoal pencil; not as dusty or smeary as the vine charcoal, but a nice dense black, just right for two black cats with deep shadows.

Mimi and Bean have been hanging out lately, as in the sketch a few days ago, Cats on the Edge. Mimi tends to spend a few days at a time with each of her kids.
