How sweet! Fellow blogger, feline slave and bird lover Wazeau purchased a print of my photo of Sophie and blogged about it. Hope Sassafras approved of the box! Visit and read about brother and sister kitties Sassafras and Nekoka and her birds Bandit and Merlin.
I love reading Bernadette Kazmarski’s The Creative Cat’s blog. Especially her stories of how she met some of the cats in her life, and the wonderful photos and paintings that highlight them. A little while ago she had this lovely entry about her cat Sophie which included a gorgeous shot of her peeking out from behind some pale white lace curtains overlooking a spray of blue flowers. I am not sure why but the photo spoke to me and I had to have it.
Of course, once it arrived, it had to be given the seal of approval by Sassafrass before I could bring it upstairs and hang it in the spot which I had earmarked for it the moment I saw it. Sass may, however, have just been approving the lingering scent of Bernadette’s pack of felines.
And Today’s Studio Cat is…

A perfect sunny spot for a kitty to bathe and enjoy life, Mewsette occupied the art stool at the easel today, and is looking quite artsy herself, a very rounded and introspective subject amid all those angled objects and contrasty light and shadow.
I desaturated the photo because the pine finish on the seat was just such a warm amber it was distracting, drawing attention to itself. I did, however, retain the green in her eyes.

My Feline- and Nature-themed Stuff at “The Barn”
Posted: April 1, 2012 Filed under: agway cats, cats, garden, marketplace | Tags: agway, cat artwork, cat photography, cats at agway, kittens at agway, merchandise sales, nature artwork 3 CommentsSo who would think a drafty old unheated honest-to-God barn from a long-time farm would be a hot spot for unique art and decorative items?
The Outlet Barn Garden and Art Center has been in business in this very same old barn for the past 15 years, with a list of loyal customers and new people stopping every day. They close on Christmas Eve and reopen on April 1, weather permitting, so I’ve moved cards and merchandise into the place and we decided on a few more things as well.
My display of feline greeting cards and notecards is in place, and with them are my garden-inspired greeting cards and notecards inspired by nature and My Home Town, all of which did quite well in the short time they were there last holiday season. In addition I have a selection of small feline and nature photos and prints in small displays and scattered throughout, and we decided today that I’d bring in a few larger prints and see how they went before bringing in more. This is also a home for crocheted washcloths, and likely a home for other handmade items that I have been planning—that painted furniture and decorative household items such as coasters and trivet tiles made from art and sketches.
And even as I was unpacking and setting up it was hard not to start browsing! I began visiting there because the place looked like the sort of place I’d like to check out, not carefully coiffed or neatly arranged, but artfully arranged and colorful outside, and inside just crowded enough in the semi-darkness of the old barn that I could take my time to peruse without feeling overwhelmed.
I ended up moving things into there because the former manager of the Agway I had been selling at was friends with Kathy, The Barn’s owner, and simply went to her and said I’d be over with my things, she’d like them and me. Life should be filled with such friends.
Kathy herself is the one who artfully arranges things in a way that makes people passing on the road find it hard to resist, and is also a master with ribbon and grapevines and such and creates all the wreaths and swags sold throughout the year, often custom-making them for long-time customers. She also makes beaded jewelry for sale in the shop.
She also plans the events with local musicians playing jazz and folk and alternative in among the gargoyles and gazing globes, or out back in one of the sample gazebos.
And I can’t forget the enthusiastic rescued chocolate lab named Irish Malarkey, named so because his eyes were green when he was a puppy, who rides in with his human every day. He carefully checked each of my boxes for treats, in between trotting around the place with that huge destructive lab tail without overturning as much as a small terra cotta flowerpot.
Supporting a local small business is important from both standpoints, from buying and selling, so in addition to placing my things there on consignment, I also promote the places where my things are consigned. I’ll share notices of events, which will be of greatest interest to local friends, and also of things I find there that you might enjoy—feline-themed of course, like the shelf cats pictured here, and the bunny planter. But there plenty of animal-themed things about the place, plus really cool gargoyles.
I have a love-hate relationship with retail. I love to create my artwork and even to create the derivative items from it like cards and notepads and prints, and the best way to get my artwork known is to create and sell these things, but it takes time to drive around and visit shops, introduce myself, deliver the goods and maintain a display; if I seem to have disappeared somewhat in the past week or so, this is why. I’ve been calling and driving around, following up suggestions from friends to visit and introduce myself and show a few representative pieces of what I have for sale. I have been in Distinctively Different Decor & More, having moved yet more artwork in last weekend for the open house. This week I was sorting and packing and labeling and preparing merchandise for this move.
The actual sales from this might break even for expenses and time, but the real benefit is in finding new customers and making new friends, and just sharing my inspirations. Finding a shop where I also have other reasons to visit just makes it better.
And there’s another constant—animals and animal rescue. One door closes and another one opens as our friends share us with their friends. It is not a loss and a gain, but simply a change.
If you see merchandise pictured here, whether it’s mine or not, that you are interested in, please follow the link to The Outlet Barn website or let me know. The website is not an online store for things in the shop because there’s just too much, but Kathy will be glad to give you a few details and ship something to you if purchase it with the possible exception of a concrete gargoyle.

Sepia Miniatures, Feline Photos Set
Posted: March 11, 2012 Filed under: animal artwork, cat artwork, cat photographs, cats, my household of felines, photographs | Tags: cat artwork, cat merchandise, cat photography, feline artwork, framed photos set, photo miniatures, photography 2 CommentsI’m sorting through merchandise as I bring it back from my shop and found these three photos. It seems so long ago I took these photos, and I realize it was nearly 20 years ago. We were all so young, what a sweet memory!
I don’t like to leave things packed away—I forget they are there, and I forget where they are, so as much as possible I hang things on the wall. These three will hang near the kitchen doorway again, but I’d love to find a home for them.
Cats love to hang out in the sun, and sometimes the combination of their markings and the light and shadow can create an abstract effect, especially in black and white. I love miniatures too, especially in sets, just little accents that make a statement all their own.
These are three of my favorite little black and white photos which I printed in sepia to match the walnut-stained frames, and hand-cut black core mats to match in tan and natural white.
“Speckle Sally Walking” featuring my long-haired white cat and “Speckle Stanley Napping” featuring my tabby Stanley are vertical images matted with natural white on top with a black core.
“Sunny Cookie” featuring my tortie girl lying in a diagonal strip of sun is a horizontal image matted in ecru with a black core.
Frame size is 3.5″ x 5″, mat opening is 1.5″ x 3″.
Frames are solid wood, walnut stained but with no polyurethane so the texture of the wood shows in a matte finish.
You can find the listed in my Etsy shop under Sepia Miniatures, Feline Photos Set.
Desk Accessories
Posted: March 8, 2012 Filed under: cat photographs, cats, daily photo, kelly, photographs, senior cats, tortoiseshell cats | Tags: cat photographs, cat photography, cats, feline photographs, pet photography, photography, tortoiseshell cat 4 CommentsPens, calculator, calendar, notepads, glasses, Kelly, all part of what makes my desk work. I love how cats cuddle up to something that’s not really comfortable to cuddle up to, like two pairs of glasses in my hard-sided glasses case, but they’ll make do if nothing else is available.

Live Animals
Posted: February 17, 2012 Filed under: animal artwork, black cats, cat photographs, cats, daily photo, giuseppe, jelly bean, mewsette, photographs, valentine | Tags: black cats, cat photographs, cat photography, feline photographs, pet photography, photography 2 CommentsYou can see that Giuseppe is asking where the live animals are. And why I need more when I already have several perfectly good live animals. They are not ordering a live human, but perhaps they should consider it, since there is only one human is she is sometimes woefully inadequate. Even Mewsette looks a little perturbed, though Jelly Bean is just sort of hanging out because that’s where the action is.
They looked carefully inside the black thing and did not see anything at all. Perhaps this human is playing a cruel joke on them.
Anything I add to their environment becomes a prop, even if it’s unintentional. They explore everything, that’s their job. In this case Peg Bowman brought back the carrier we had used for Skeeter when we took him to the vet, and I had no other place to put it at that moment than on that table. And because the Feline Inspection and Quality Control takes their job very seriously and will drop everything to perform their duties at a moment’s notice, the carrier was immediately covered and surrounded by cats. I left it there for a few days waiting for a good shot. There was a second from today, different; perhaps I’ll post that tomorrow.

Framed!
Posted: February 15, 2012 Filed under: animal artwork, black cats, cat behavior, cat photographs, cats, daily photo, mewsette, mr. sunshine, photographs, valentine | Tags: black cats, cat photographs, cat photography, feline photographs, pet photography, photography, two black cats, two cats cuddling 2 CommentsMewsette gives Mr. Sunshine a big, soft sisterly headbutt as they nuzzle and bathe each other.
Of course, they are doing this inside the square of a frame I’ve just assembled, just right for kitties in need of a special kitty spot to be. Trust me, it’s like setting down a piece of paper or a box, cats are immediately sucked into the square, or rectangle, or whatever it is you’ve got. But they always make a lovely picture, worthy of framing, probably more worthy than that thing you’ve got ready.
The real challenge is managing to frame something without at least one cat hair on the mat.
Of course, they need to leave before I get to the part with the mat cutter and the glass. Imagine that, telling cats to get off the table while I’m working!

Heart-Shaped Cats
Posted: February 14, 2012 Filed under: animal artwork, black cats, cat artwork, cat behavior, cat photographs, cats, heart cats, holiday, mewsette, mr. sunshine, my household of felines, photographs, valentine | Tags: black cats, cat illustration, cat photographs, cat photography, feline photographs, heart-shaped cats, pet photography, photography, two black cats, two cats cuddling, valentine's day 5 Comments
Heart Shaped Cats on the Afghan
My Fantastic Four are famous for their heart-shaped hugs and cuddles, but the two most famous are Mr. Sunshine and his sister Mewsette, featured here in just a few everyday cuddles.
This is only a portion of my personal heart-shaped cat collection. Mr. Sunshine and Miss Mewsette have always been cuddle buddies, and they’ve always had this habit of curling up together cheek to cheek and chest to chest and wrapping their little arms around each other, even crossing tails in the front. They are a somewhat elongated heart here on the afghan with the heart right-side up, but looking at them below they are a more typical heart shape only with the heart upside down!

Heart-shaped cats the other way!
Mewsette is clearly posing, but Mr. Sunshine isn’t as concerned, he just wants to cuddle. Unfortunately, they don’t always cuddle together in the best light or against a contrasting background, and they are black, absorbing all of what’s available and not giving much back, making photos a challenge. Look closely, though, Mewsette has her arm right under Mr. Sunshine’s chin and he has his below hers, then he has his hind leg tucked into her belly and she has hers wrapped around his hip, then they have their tails layered on top of each others’, completely interwoven.
Here they are one night in my studio as I was moving furniture and cleaning, supervising what I was doing.

Mr. Sunshine and Mewsette curled again.
And then the view from the top shows them heart-shaped again, but Mimi is sleeping behind them so they look a little misshapen.

Heart-shaped again!
I found one very early photo of them as they were apparently developing this wonderful way to cuddle, though Giuseppe in the background looks a little miffed at the attention they are getting. I can assure you that I only got one shot because Giuseppe got up and sauntered between me and them.

Early stages of the heart-shaped cat.
And finally, the photo of them I took on the night before Valentine’s Day in 2009 where they have their technique fully developed. Too bad that old camera wasn’t so good in low light conditions! Still, I couldn’t believe how sweet they were.

The original Heart Cats
Sometimes when I get a good photo composition that’s blurry or otherwise unclear, and not in a way that I can use for effect, I play around with it in PhotoShop. I never get enough time playing in PhotoShop so I’ll take any excuse. I liked the way this series of filters and adjustments clarified the image, even though it’s no longer photographic. The black outlines and areas of color remind me of the illustrations from some of the books I looked at and read as a child.

The original Heart Cats illustration.
I liked this so much I used it to print on a tote bag for sale.
And, of course, this very photo went on to become a Valentine note card, available all year round as a greeting card for when you need to send a note to that special heart cat.
