Update: Sylvester Is In a New Home
Posted: April 23, 2012 Filed under: adopting a cat, animal rescue, cats adopted | Tags: a final wish, animal rescuer with cancer, cats, cats for adoption, dogs, dogs for adoption, dorothy's pets, pets 4 CommentsMelanie tells us that she has taken Sylvester the lovebug, the last of Dorothy’s Pets, to his new home.
Sylvester was taken to his new potentially permanent home yesterday. This is not an ideal adoption, but we’re going to monitor closely and provide assistance whenever necessary. His new person is 75 years old and lost her husband last year. She was looking for mainly provide foster care because she travels to California to see her family a couple of months at a time. Plus she was unsure if she would be able to manage Sylvester’s medication.
After meeting Sylvester she decided she wanted to try to make him a permanent member of her home and has already begun to make provisions to have him cared for while she’s away. She’s very open to us visiting whenever we have time and calling to check in to see how things are going. She also stated she will call me if she ever feels she needs help or feels she cannot care for Sylvester. I believe she will do just that.
She is a very kind and sweet lady who also seems to have Sylvester’s best interest in mind. I think she will do her best to make it work and with us monitoring things closely Sylvester will never be without anything he needs.
Melanie
And don’t forget…
Melanie has been working with Dorothy and her pets for nearly a year, all through Dorothy’s diagnosis and decline from brain cancer last year, and Dorothy’s death in February, all the while caring for her own 14 cats and three dogs. Anyone who has rescued animals knows what a toll this has taken on her time and her means. She managed to place three of Dorothy’s five pets; two of her cats were placed by the friend Dorothy stayed with in Ohio at the end of her life, read more in this post.
Now Melanie has another complication and a sad diagnosis with one of her own rescues. Her beagle, Cocoa, was just diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma, and she needs to raise money to help continue with Cocoa’s chemo. Melanie has set up a new ChipIn account to continue with donations for Sylvester’s continuing care, and for others who would like to help this rescuer who has done so much with one of her own: http://dorothyspets.chipin.com/sylvester-and-cocoa.

A Foster Home for Sylvester
Posted: April 2, 2012 Filed under: adopting a cat, animal rescue, cats for adoption | Tags: a final wish, animal rescuer with cancer, cats, cats for adoption, dogs, dogs for adoption, dorothy's pets, pets 12 CommentsSylvester the lovebug, the last of Dorothy’s Pets, continues to flourish, especially after his spa day where he was groomed and trimmed, all the while purring and kneading in happiness. Look, he’s even making biscuits with his front paws in this photo! He’s come a long way from the scruffy kitty with the open sore on his neck we met last fall who hid under the bed. I think he looks like a plush toy and he’s sounding more and more like a perfect loving companion for someone who is waiting for an only cat.
Sylvester still needs to find a new home in the next month. He is still staying at Dorothy’s home and Melanie visits him every night. She had initially decided she’d try integrating him into her household, but the logistics of 14 cats and three dogs is already complicated. Adding Sylvester’s natural shyness and multiple skin conditions resulting from diet and a severe flea allergy would not be the best conditions for his progress—both his personality and health might suffer and revert to where they had been, sad for a cat who’s come so far. Dorothy’s home will be up for sale in the next month, and Sylvester needs to find a home before everything is removed and strangers come walking through.
Another complication for Melanie with one of her own

Sylvester’s new profile
Here’s what Melanie has to say about Sylvester:
Sylvester is awesome! He’s approximately 5 – 7 years old and neutered. His owner passed away in February and he’s still living in his home, but once the house goes up for sale his future is uncertain. Right now me and my husband care for him every night.
Sylvester is incredibly affectionate. I cannot stress this enough. He loves to snuggle and makes a great lap warmer. He’s also very generous with his head bonks. He’s become more playful since we started caring for him. He loves feather and laser toys. He does this really adorable play hiss when he’s really excited. It’s hilarious. We just had him professionally groomed and the groomers loved him! She told me that as they were shaving his belly he purred and kneaded the entire time.
Sylvester does have some allergies and must be kept indoors only because he cannot be exposed to fleas. When we first began caring for him he was in a lot of discomfort and was scratching himself raw. We found a vet to work with and he’s done a complete turnaround. He’s healed and his care didn’t turn out to be nearly as expensive or extensive as we initially thought it would be. Plus he’s incredibly easy to care for and that really helps. He’s just an all around great cat.
We would like to see Sylvester placed as an only pet in the home due to his severe flea allergy and he must be kept indoors only, no exceptions.
If you would like to hear more about Sylvester please contact me. He probably only has about a month left before his home goes up for sale and he must be removed.

Sylvester Steps Out, Update on Dorothy’s Pets
Posted: February 27, 2012 Filed under: adopting a cat, animal rescue, cats for adoption | Tags: a final wish, animal rescuer with cancer, cats, cats for adoption, dogs, dogs for adoption, dorothy's pets, pets 2 CommentsMelanie has good news of all Dorothy’s pets as well as memorials for Dorothy herself, but the most wonderful news is the wondrous progress and change in Sylvester, the allergy-ridden cat who at last update was still hiding under the bed and resisting treatment. Dorothy would be so happy to hear what Melanie reports.
Sylvester has turned into one of the most affectionate cats I’ve ever met. He’s super snuggly, gives nose kisses, and loves to cuddle on the couch. He’s become very playful and loves those little mice and the feather toy. He’s lost a little weight and we will continue to work on that.
He’s so much happier now. He’s always purring and follows us around when we get there. He has this great meow that makes me laugh every time. He loves to play and loves to cuddle even more. He’s generous with his very strong head bonks! He also loves to rub his face on our faces and gives good nose kisses. He’s a complete lover boy. I’ll get some better photos of him once he’s all healed up and I can have his coat groomed. He’s beautiful now, but he’ll be even better once he’s all cleaned up.
Melanie adds that, while all the others of Dorothy’s pets have homes, Sylvester is still at Dorothy’s house and Melanie would really like to find a foster or adoptive home for him.
Sylvester is still living in Dorothy’s home for now. We do plan on moving him into our home. It’s been taking us a while to get prepared for him since our time has been very limited. We are trying to rearrange things in our basement to set him up in a temporary cat playpen while we introduce him to the rest of our crew.
Due to the fact that I have 14 cats and 3 dogs already in my home I am not the best home for Sylvester. He really wants to be loved on all of the time. He’s incredibly affectionate and I know that he would not get the amount of attention that he requires. He deserves much better than I will be able to offer him. I am also concerned that since he does have a flea allergy that I will not be able to prevent his exposure to fleas with so many animals here. I have never and do not have a flea problem in my home, but it’s inevitable that he would be exposed with the dogs going in and out of the house constantly. I would love to see him in a home as an only pet or with an indoor only cat friend.
The original Sylvester
This is Sylvester. He’s approx. 5 years old. Sylvester suffers from allergic dermatitis and he had severe skin wounds when he was found. He allowed Dorothy to bathe him and bandage him. He is so patient and gentle. He really trusts Dorothy and is very close to her. He is extremely sweet, but needs time to trust someone new. I pet sat for Dorothy once while she was in the hospital. Sylvester hid most of the evening, but I woke up on the couch with him sleeping on my chest. Sylvester still has skin wounds from his allergies. Sylvester was under the care of a dermatologist at PVSEC and needs to continue care with them.
Melanie says thanks
I want to thank everyone for their supportive and kind words and donations during this time. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything. I know Dorothy did her best to hang in there until she knew her pets were taken care of. That meant everything to her. I could not have done all of this without you.
I have used all of the donations that I received to care for Dorothy’s pets. They have been used to help me with Sylvester. If anyone would like to contribute to help me continue to care for Sylvester it would be more than appreciated.

All the other pets and where they are
Barney and Petey are doing very well in their new homes. Their new owners are thrilled to have them as part of their families.
Lilibel and Mickey were living with Dorothy’s friend in Ohio where Dorothy was moved to in her final days. They have been found a home together with a wonderful middle aged couple that are huge cat lovers.
About Dorothy
Many of you already know, but for those of you that do not, Dorothy passed away on Friday, February 3. She is finally at peace. She was cremated and her wake is on Friday, March 2 at Bohn Funeral Home in Ambridge. Her funeral is on Saturday, March 3 at St. John Baptist Church in Baden. Posted: January 17, 2012 Filed under: adopting a cat, animal rescue, cats for adoption | Tags: a final wish, animal rescuer with cancer, cats, cats for adoption, dogs, dogs for adoption, dorothy's pets, pets 31 CommentsMelanie posted a detailed update on Dorothy’s pets on the original story, A Final Wish, and Dorothy must give up her pets and likely leave home for the hospital. I’ve left the comment there and also made a new post of it just to make sure it gets the most circulation possible. Her comment is immediately below, then the original story’s text with links to the original story and updates so you can read all the wonderful comments from people all over the world.
Latest Update:
Sadly, Dorothy has started on a very fast downward spiral. Her breathing has been very labored. I have been doing my best to keep up with her needs and the needs of her pets. I just received an emergency call from Dorothy’s POA. Dorothy cannot breathe today and will possibly be on her way to the hospital. Dorothy cannot care for the pets any more and has finally asked for them to be removed from the home. The POA (asked that her name not be mentioned) has asked me to remove Barney tonight and the cats by this weekend. I will be contacting Barney’s potential adopter to see if she can take Barney right away. I really need homes or foster homes for the cats as soon as possible. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.
Melanie
Information from a recent update and the text of the original article
Barney is starting to show his age more. I think it’s possible that he may not be with us long enough to see a new home. His potential adopter is very understanding and patient regarding the situation.
To date we don’t have any adopters for any of the cats.
Dorothy is still hanging in there. Her short term memory continues to get worse as well as her breathing. I think everyone is surprised though at how she is still really fighting this cancer as it has spread through her lungs, brain, and now liver. She’s truly sticking around to make sure her pets are found great homes.
To date we have raised $370.00 through the Chip In site. I would really like to be able to get Sylvester’s medical care taken care of so we could really use more traffic to the Chip In site.
http://dorothyspets.chipin.com/dorothys-pets
Right now Sylvester has a very large wound on his neck from scratching and his poor bum area is raw from him biting at it. I need to get him more comfortable, but I cannot afford his care and Dorothy’s funds are currently wrapped up in paying for her hospice care and medical treatment. Any help would really be incredible. Also I would love to see Animal Advocates get some donations for really stepping up and going out of their way to help us with Petey. I’m going to make a donation to them once I have Dorothy’s pets settled and their medical expenses taken care of.
The word about Dorothy’s pets spread quickly and nationally. I want to thank everyone who forwarded my plea and donated to the Chip In. It’s been wonderful to receive so much support. Things have really died down and I still need homes for the Lilibel, Mickey, and Sylvester. If anyone has any suggestions to help me get the cats into loving homes, please let me know. I have sent many e-mails and left many voice mails with cat groups that I am comfortable working with, but so far I have not received any responses.
Once again, thank you to all that have helped so far. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

Here’s the original story, but please also click to that post to read all the wonderful comments…
In our rambles finding our forever pets, we’ve all encountered a lifelong animal rescuer, an individual so dedicated to capturing animals and making them well and whole that their life story is wrapped around with all the animals they saved. Such is Dorothy, who has saved and nurtured probably more animals than she can remember.
And in these extended families of rescued animals are always those who stayed with the rescuer because they were difficult to adopt with extreme or complicated medical needs, behavioral issues resulting from abuse or simply a personality that didn’t quite fit into another household. A rescuer like Dorothy would simply keep them on and care for them for the rest of their lives.
Dorothy has tragically developed brain cancer and is very near the end of the time she’ll be able to care for the five animals who still live with her, and as her final wish for their welfare she’d love to know they are in loving homes before she succumbs to her condition. If you can foster or adopt, or know of a rescue or shelter that has room for any of these special needs cats or dogs, Dorothy’s friend Melanie is the contact person whose information is at the bottom. Please share this as far as you can and hope that Lilibel, Mickey, Sylvester, Barney and Petey can find homes as nurturing as Dorothy’s.
From Melanie
My dear friend is nearing the end of her life due to cancer. She has 5 great pets that need re-homed soon. Dorothy would like to continue to care for her pets until she is too ill to do so. This could be a couple of weeks to another month or so. Dorothy has been a rescuer and friend to the underdog for most of her life. She is really trying to hang in there to make sure her pets find great new homes. I hope you can help make her final wish come true.
This gem is Lilibel. Lilibel is approx. 11-12 years old.
She was declawed by her previous owners. Lilibel tends to be a wall flower, but will come around to make herself known now and then. She is super sweet and cuddly with Dorothy, but takes her time warming up to strangers. Lilibel has an eye condition called chorioretinal scarring, but she is not blind from the condition. She also carries the feline herpes virus, but is managed well with Lysine.
This orange cutie is my absolute favorite cat! His name is Mickey. Mickey is approx. 12 years old and is just as sweet as can be. He loves cuddle. You can hold him like a baby and he’ll stay like that forever. He’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever met. Everyone loves Mickey. He’s just that cool.
When Mickey was younger he suffered from a urinary blockage. Since then he’s had a couple of surgeries to remove scar tissue from his bladder. This has caused chronic inflammation of the bladder and unfortunately does suffer from inappropriate urination. Some of this could be behavioral, but it’s mostly a medical issue. This could probably be controlled with the appropriate medications. He needs someone that is understanding and willing to work with him regarding this issue.
Barney is 15 and has Cushings, seizures, and cancer. He is really looking for hospice care.
Even though Barney has these health issues, he is still full of life. Barney loves going on walks, acts like a puppy when it’s time for “cookies”, and loves a good butt scratch. He’s a scraggle-butt cutie that still has a lot of fun left in him.
Petey has been adopted, but you might like to know about him anyway. This little guy is Petey. Petey is about 3-4 years old. He’s a Jack Russell mix so Petey will require a home that can run him and wear him out. Petey requires a lot of attention and wants to be close all of the time. Dorothy is his third home.
Sadly, Petey may have been abused in his past. He required hip surgery on both hips because he “fell down the steps” in his last home. Though Petey went through a lot before getting to Dorothy, he is a snuggle bug and is incredibly sweet. Petey does need an alpha owner. He is very submissive with me and my husband, but tends to be more pushy with Dorothy. Since Dorothy has become more ill and has not been able to provide Petey with the exercise outlet he requires, he has become frustrated and has be-gun to take it out on the other animals in the home even though he’s lived with them for 2 years. Dorothy is ok with having Petey re-homed sooner rather than later because she realizes that he needs more than she can provide him in her current condition.

Petey was about to be taken to a shelter today, but just in time, an incredible foster home came through. Petey is now listed with Animal Advocates and is the featured dog on their web site.
I want to thank Patty Murphy and the wonderful people that offered to foster Petey until a permanent home can be found. If anyone is interested in Petey or know of someone that can provide the loving and disciplined home Petey needs his postings can be located here:

To date, Barney seems to have a good placement, and people outside of the Pittsburgh area have expressed interest in Sylvester, Lilibel and Petey, but for the purposes of home visits prior to adoption and for limited means of transportation, they’d like to keep the adoptions local if possible, or done with the assistance of a local rescue organization.

Hearts and Paws Pet Adoption and Care Fair

My view of things.
The weather was beautiful, and I personally saw five kitties be adopted to good homes! Plus I sold a respectable amount of merchandise for a five-hour event.
When we’ve had storms nearly every afternoon for weeks, I consider my options when attending an outdoor festival, which is most of my participation in the summer months. One suprise microburst can ruin months of work and hundreds of dollars of merchandise.
And in an event such as this, every other tent was a rescue of some sort and all had animals for adoption in cages and on leashes, not to mention the animals who were visiting.
But there were no storms and no other surprises. The event hosted nearly 50 vendors and was very well-attended by the public, and it certainly seemed to me that everyone came away happy.

The adult cats for adoption.
I was a vendor, so unlike being a visitor and being able to mill around I was confined to the area where my tent was, all the way at one end of two rows of vendors. As I tossed my tent and bins onto the grass in my spot, one of the women from Animal Care and Welfare asked me if it was okay if I was near cats because they were going to have cages with cats and kittens on the table next to me. “Wait until you see my stuff!” I said.

Orange and white kitten is adopted!
People started visiting immediately, and the kittens in the cages were a hit. A young couple visited, then visited again, and a little orange kitten with white paws was the first one to be adopted!
As others visited the cages I greeted visitors in my tent, my merchandise constantly rearranged by the wonderful breeze blowing through. I saw several friends, many of whom I trade e-mails with for homeless kitties—it’s nice to see these people “in person”!

Two kittens going home together!
Next a woman came back to look at two of the other kittens. She had never had a pet but had been considering adopting for a while, and advised by a friend of hers who was on the staff of the event decided she’d take a chance on the kittens. We all told her about the benefit and joy of watching two kittens grow up and assured her she’d be telling us all cat stories next year. She adopted a playful black and white kitten and a classic black kitten who has a lot of Oriental in him with a dignified bearing, radar-dish ears and a long nose with a regal bump. I loved the black and white kitten, but I have the feeling that black kitten is going to be a very special adult.

Nova is adopted.

Pongo is adopted too!
And before she was even complete, another two women came back for another visit to decide exactly which two adult cats they were going to adopt to be friends with their current adult cat. The two women were mother and daughter and had met and discussed all the adults and the one older kitten and decided on the laid-back long-haired tan and white kitty, Nova, and the eight-month-old black and white kitten, Pongo, who had been big-brothering the little ones in the kitten cage.

Tammy
There is still one little gray kitten who needs a home, two orange adults, Teresa and Rusty, and one semi-long-haired tortie cat with a perfect little orange diamond on her head named Tammy.
Animal Care and Welfare is operated by the owners and staff of Paws Here a While Pet Resort.
I hope all the other rescue and adoption organizations did as well!

Two dogs for adoption.
Several rescued dogs were being walked around, including these two mixes—a little pug, a little Pom, a little Chihuahua? Nobody knows because they were found over the winter and no one claimed them.
I was excited to debut my crocheted pawprints, printed gift bags and tote bags at this event! Even though they’ve been available for a while, it never feels as if they’ve “arrived” until they’ve been seen by the public at a show or festival. I had great feedback and several sales.
I wish I could have gotten more of the stories and visited more people, but I barely had the chance. I’ll have to find an assistant one of these days.
Thanks to Hearts & Paws Pet Ministry from Christ United Methodist Church for planning and hosting this event. This is the seventh year, and it’s only gotten bigger each year! I’m looking forward to next year already.
