Kelly’s Sunbath

Kelly deep cleans her paw.

Kelly is inspired by the warm evening sun to have a bath. Everything inspires Kelly to have a bath! I was waiting for her to sit up so the sun could highlight her outline, imagining how lovely that would look on her slender and graceful frame, light shining through her ears, perhaps catching her whiskers…

But Kelly had other ideas and sitting for a photo was not one of them since she never stopped bathing no matter what I did. Apparently that front paw, and the other front paw, and her face, and her shoulders were all critically soiled and needed to be cleaned, deeply and without pause. The first time I called out her name and waved a toy she looked at me quickly, then not again. Perhaps her expression below might give a bit of enlightenment about how Kelly feels about being interrupted at her bath.

Face Washing

tortoiseshell cat washing her face

Kelly washing her face.

One of my favorites from yesterday’s bath sequence, Kelly vigorously washing her face having, turned one of her ears inside out which she does nearly every time she washes her face. You can see even the insides of her ears are tortoiseshell, having freckles and speckles like the rest of her.

The light and Kelly’s activities were very similar today to yesterday, so I did not take another 2GB of photos of Kelly bathing but decided to use another from that sequence.

She’s just such a little girl and a constant bather. She has never been comfortable with change or disorder (and yet she had the misfortune to live with me), and I always felt all that bathing was somehow an effort to organize all her tortie spots. Bathing is one of her comforts; along with the constant motion and careful attention to detail is the loud purring of a very happy kitty.

I like the way the dark background and cropping on this make it seem almost like an abstract. I remembered it from reviewing them yesterday, and flipping through thumbnails today this series of closeups jumped out to me, and this was my favorite from them all.

Kelly With Squashes

Kelly With Squashes

Kelly steps out again today after a week or so in the bottom shelf of a cabinet. She’s been trying to figure things out, and I am just letting that happen. And she didn’t step out voluntarily—I placed her in the sun on this cabinet and gave her lots of love, just her, and she decided it was such a good idea that she is still on that cabinet, even though the sun is long gone. Just a little encouragement goes a long way with a delicate sensibility like Kelly.

She also graced me with a lovely multi-part bath session resulting in about 2GB of photos of Kelly bathing.

But they were each very much worth the time. I will have to share them in groups somehow, but for now I am exhausted by the excitement of a one-hour photo session (after a day of much photography, it was just so beautiful) and downloading and reviewing the photos, trying to choose one to share tonight.

I chose this one because of its multiple interest points, color scheme and resemblance to a classic still life though it has a certain oddness about it that I find intriguing. Those squashes are a few acorn squash I didn’t realize I still had, having faded to yellow from the rich deep forest green of autumn. The decorative dish is avacado green tempered glass and gracefully formed, the base is a brass-tone composite metal, the two colors and textures, or lack thereof, contrasting nicely.

As far as still lifes with cats go, it’s not quite Kelly With Apples for peace and contentment, though there is one similar to that in this series that I took intentionally, but it is certainly interesting to look at. Looks like another painting to me, and perhaps the other still life too.

And though Photoshop’s artistic filters don’t resemble any styles that I know of I like to play with them just to see what and image might look like. I used “dry brush” because I think it looks more like a watercolor than the watercolor filter does.

Excuse Me, Girlfriend? 2011

black cat and tortie cat nose to nose

Mimi and Cookie

Cookie and Mimi actually get along just fine, but Mimi kept trying to: 1) steal the limelight as I was photographing The Goddess, and; 2) steal the catnip candy cane from under Cookie’s paws. Cookie gives a friendly warning, her ears and whiskers swept forward, and a warning was enough for Mimi, ears and whiskers swept back.

Cookie’s coloring looks odd because she is in full sun so her details are flashed out in order to get any detail in Mimi, who is in shadow. Why couldn’t they have been reversed?!

Mysterious Kelly:2011

tortoiseshell cat

Mysterious Kelly

Yes, this is the photo I came to identify with A Little Bit About Kelly, little Kelly’s rescue story. It was taken only last year, yet Kelly is ageless in her petite stature, her tortoiseshell coat, her slightly uncertain expression.

She certainly looks mysterious in all that dappled sunlight as she peers around the corner at me.

Kelly used to be very shy and frightened of strangers, but she’s taken up this spot very near the entrance door where she can greet people. She’s very talkative, and while guests are admiring all those congenial black cats and Mistress Cookie, Kelly lets them know she is waiting. She stretches one sweet little paw way out in greeting and purrs so nicely, then does her graceful little dance routine ending with lots of face rubs on the visitor, who would be interested in any common black cats with such a precious tortoiseshell kitty right there?

It’s a joy to see Kelly, in her senior years, finally comfortable in life with humans and enjoying guests instead of always being cautious and hiding from strangers. She wasn’t feral but a stray cat trapped with a feral colony, and was so fearful in her cage at the shelter that she was to be euthanized because no one would adopt her and the shelter needed the space, though she was adopted at the last minute. I can’t imagine the details of her early life living in an abandoned building, though I’m sure it was traumatic for such a sensitive soul. When she came here it was weeks before I saw anything but big fearful eyes under the table in the spare kitty room. Step by step over the years she has become more relaxed and trusting. Kelly is 17.

Never give up on a kitty. Here is her story:

A Little Bit About Kelly

Part 2: The Rescue

Part 3: Saved At the Last Minute

Part 4: A Friend

Part 5: Home

And you can find Kelly in photos and sketches and stories all over The Creative Cat.

Catnip Party: 2011

three cats with catnip toy

The Girls Have a Catnip Party

Three of the girls organize an impromptu catnip party on the sunny landing. Actually, Cookie was enjoying the catnip candy cane first, and was joined by Mimi and Mewsette to take turns biting, licking and rubbing their faces on the upstairs catnip candy cane.

Surely no one would notice Mewsette easing in for her 'nip.

It remained peaceful and amiable until Cookie, who started the party, decided to end it by pulling the toy away from Mimi and Mewsette and getting her nip’s worth. Cookie can take on two cats, one who is more than twice her size and 16 years her junior. I thought it was magnanimous of her to allow them to party with her in the first place.

Don't even think of touching that catnip toy.

Mewsette the Big Little Sister: 2011

two cats at the top of the stairs

Cookie and Mewsette

A sweet one from last year…

Mewsette always makes these little overtures to Cookie, and you can see by Cookie’s reaction that it’s not well-received. You can also see that Mewsette is easily twice as big as Cookie and can take a beating from a sometimes fussy senior tortie girl. Mewsette apparently loves her little big sister, and perhaps some day Cookie will learn to appreciate her big little sister.

Cookie doesn’t know, but Mewsette curls up next to her on the bed after Cookie has fallen asleep, and Cookie certainly appreciates Mewsette’s warmth, even if she’s not awake to know it.

Here are a few images of Mewsette keeping watch over Cookie as she slept: Big and Little Sisters and Copy Cats, and cuddling with her when she wasn’t feeling well: A Loyal Sister and Cookie Says Thank You. Cookie did grow to appreciate big, warm, soft Mewsette, as seen in Cookie’s Blessing.

Kelly in the Cat Library: 2011

tortoiseshell cat sleeping on books

Kelly Sleeping in the Cat Library

When Kelly sleeps, sometimes she just looks like a pile of legs.

The Cat Library was the place to be for a while there, then everyone got tired of it. It was always one of Kelly’s favorite places, though, and even though the slightly uneven heights of books may not seem to be comfortable, Kelly conforms her slender body to fit into each nook and cranny.

I had no idea setting up my cat book library in this way would make such a photogenic setting.

It was truly a trick to not get myself in this photograph as well, considering there’s a large mirror behind Kelly. Or perhaps I just don’t show up in mirrors. Ask my kitties about that.

Daily Sketch: Kitty’s Sleeping

conte sketch of cat sleeping

Kitty's Sleeping, red and brown conté © B.E. Kazmarski

Kelly is beginning to drip off the edge of the book case she’s chosen as her current daily sleeping spot. I’m not sure why she chooses an exposed and uncomfortable spot like this—at least, that’s my perception. Still, clinging to the corner of a tall cabinet can’t be relaxing, yet she falls asleep and I find all sorts of limbs hanging down.

In this case, she is curled and relaxed and falling apart just a little.

“Kitty’s sleeping” is something we said to children to help keep them quiet.
